Components Explained:

An Activity Guide
The Activity Guide is the Facilitators Lesson Plan Guide. It outlines the general and specific outcomes being covered by each activity. Each activity includes a hands-on experiential activity, game, craft, puzzle, experiment, or other fun and interactive learning technique to present the concept. These techniques make the themed unit enjoyable and memorable for the student while allowing the facilitator to present the material easily, in a way that covers varied learning styles.Listed under each activity, you will find the list of materials needed to complete the activity and specific directions provided to aid in facilitating the activity goes well.

A Material Checklist
The Material Checklist shows exactly what downloaded resource as well as other materials to collect to complete each activity. Most materials under the "Need to Collect" area are items easily found in most homes and local stores. If a specialty item is required, the checklist indicates where to get the item from. Units have been designed to take into consideration very limited budgets.

A Reproducible Student Workbook
Like the Activity Guide, Material Checklist and Resource Information Sheets, the Student Workbook is organized to follow the Activity number presented.

Information Documents, Games, Puzzles and Cards
Each topic includes numerous supporting documents. These documents provide all the information required to complete the unit objectives as well as the games, puzzles, and cards associated with the activities. The unit is a self-contained program with all components included.

A Completion Certificate
Each topic includes a completion certificate you can customize to each student, acknowledging and celebrating their effort and achievement.

Assessment Tools
All science and social studies units include a terms quiz and flash cards as assessment tools.

1.) Do I need to pull my children out of school in order to go through a full year's worth of this material?

A: No, the material can be integrated with whatever you are currently using. In fact, because the material is so fun and experiential you will often find the children are engaged and wanting to do more, allowing you to finish the units within days or weeks depending on how you wish to schedule them in.

2.) As a teacher can I incorporate this material directly into my regular classes without disrupting my scheduled material?

A: Absolutely. We have many teachers that use the material as the base for their lesson planning because it is so extensive and addresses the curriculum objectives set out. You can also use this material either as a supplement for what you already do. Many first time teachers have indicated these units have been an incredible help for them to get organized. Teachers who switch grades or subjects also find this is a great resource to use to address those topics they aren't familiar with giving them everything they need, cutting their prep time down significantly.

3.) As a parent will this material work alongside any regular classroom material my children are taking anywhere in the world?  Will it enhance their learning experience and move them forward in their education whichever country we are in?

A: All our material is easily integrated to augment any regular classroom material, no matter where a child studies in the world. The units are designed to engage children and enhance their learning experience. Learning isn't bound by walls or countries, but by interest and engagement and that is what we have endeavored to incorporate in this material.

4.) As a parent in a non-English speaking country, can I use this material to provide my child with a complete, Canadian approved level of education for Grades 1-9 in our free time in the evenings and weekends?

A: Yes, if your child understands English, this material will absolutely provide a base Canadian approved level of education. While the topics vary slightly from province to province, the overall flow of the material would be accepted no matter where you went in Canada. Keep in mind that the topics are not the base for that approval, but being able to articulate learning and show an understanding of concepts, the most important being able to read, write and do basic math... everything else is secondary.

5.) How much time should I dedicate on a part-time basis to take my child through a grade in one year?

A:  It would only take 5-8hrs / week to get through all the materials of a single grade.  This means that in your spare time, you can have fun with your child or children, and take them through an entire year's worth of education!  The time is dependent on the child and your organization abilities. Each child works at their own pace and so some will want to do more than you had planned and others may not. On average if you did one activity a day you could get most units done in a week or two.  Since there are 8-9 units per grade, the timetable would be dependent on you, your child and your families schedule. (Note from Margaret Ashley: I don't like pre-set time frames as it completely depends on a child, and that’s far more important than saying "no we have to spend 5-8 hours on this". A child should always lead the learning if you want them to really retain the information). Now if you mix the units in with things like music in the background or EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique) for increasing focus, or a hypnotherapy session in the background while they work you may be able to stretch that out and gain much more from the educational experience.

6.) Is there any testing that I need to take my child through in order to know if they have 'passed' a grade?

A: Testing is an arbitrary means of identifying what material has been retained. It is not used to "pass" a grade as there is a "no-fail" policy in Canada.  The workbook and assessment tools will show you what the child has learned from a particular activity and that is just as effective a means of assessment (test) as any, but without the pressure usually associated with time deadlines for getting the answers down in the right way.

7.) Would I be able to pull my child out from school, anywhere in the world, take them through a few of these grades (perhaps even in a single year), and put him or her back into school without deterring from their educational experience?

A: Yes, you can. Keep in mind that children are learning every minute of every day, in some format, so nothing detracts from their educational experience, it just may have a non-conventional format. They would have no problem reintegrating back into the system as each grade is not built on topics previously learned in former grades up until high school, and even then that applies only to certain subjects and can be challenged with equivalency testing.

8.) Is there a community of support to connect with other teachers and parents around the world?

A:  In addition to the Facebook community created for this course -- http://www.facebook.com/NaturalLearningCentre -- here are many communities & support type groups out there. A simple search on the internet for those located in your area would give you access to those in close proximity for you to connect with.

9.) Do I have access to assistance while I'm taking my children through these grades?

A: Yes through our Facebook Community listed above. Keep in mind the units are set up in such a manner that assistance shouldn't be required for the material itself.  It's very detailed in its explanation and we find few have ever asked for assistance. Those that have had simply overlooked some aspect that was there.  What we usually find people are asking for assistance with has nothing to do with the material so much as issues around behavior and love of learning to motivate a child to do any type of “school” work. What we suggest in those cases is to present material as "fun" with games, crafts and experiments and not even mention it  as "school work".  There are numerous resources and support system suggestions and guidance in the Natural Intuitive Learning Membership offered here at the BodyMind Institute.

10.) Can I use this material to set up a school in a country where education isn't readily available?

A: That depends on the laws of your country, but yes this material could be used as the base for setting up an educational setting, be that a school or a group of parents or community leaders that wish to provide children with a base of learning.

11.) Can I link my non-profit organization with yours in bringing this amazing information to the world?

A: We are always open to creating alliances with those who wish to open new doors to the children of the world. Send us your information and proposal and we will review it.  If it is in alignment with our mission and purpose in serving the children of the world, then we would happily accept a link.

12.) How can I contribute to the material in these grades?  May I donate my time to help support this amazing educational gift to the world?

A: If you feel you can contribute to the material or would like to donate time to support what we offer, send us an email outlining what and how you envision that and we can start the process from there.
