The Power of Gratitude
I finish all of my group classes with a 3 - 5 minute gratitude practice. When I describe this to new participants, I simply say it’s a short guided meditation. However the fact that we are creating the experience of gratitude in a group setting is more powerful beyond explanation. And this is why I never really bother to explain it…I’d much rather people have the experience. This is what has them coming back for more.
When I was first introduced to the HeartMath system I didn’t really “get” it. There was a lot of talk about brain waves, energy fields and ECGs. I had a hard time wrapping my head around how this was going to simplify my life. My mentor at the time had suggested that I just give it a try. I did…And I was pretty much blown away. He used a biofeedback mechanism to identify when my heart was “coherent” and guided me through a very brief gratitude exercise. I was lying on my back relaxed, eyes closed, palms up to the ceiling and was cued to focus on my breathing - “Inhale deep in to your belly….Feel your exhale (through your heart), with each exhale feel the release, letting go of anything that is not serving you. Now move your heart’s attention onto one thing that you’re grateful for…with your breath feel this gratitude spread to every part of your being. Allow yourself to completely surrender into this gratitude…” It was amazing!!
I didn’t need to see the charts of my coherence because I felt it. I do however understand the importance of these feedback mechanisms for some. This system is used as a training tool for many pro athletes, one sport I know uses it immensely is golf. Golfers are taught that to be in “the zone” is to be in that place of non attachment, where they can visualize their perfect shot and know (in their heart) that they can create it. This made perfect sense to me after my initial experience.
When you are able to create this experience of pure gratitude in the moment, you will be truly unstoppable. It sounds simple and it is. But it takes practice and presence. Like all automatic habits we must condition our response and this happens by repetitive practice until the habit we want becomes unconscious.
If you can do this somehow with a group there is an even greater benefit of tapping into more energy, but a group or a guide are not at all necessary. All you really need is the commitment to being your best and the presence to give yourself these 5 minutes every SINGLE day.
