A Cultural Chasm?

As the US faces the uncertain reality of its election result and Britain pursues Brexit, whatever that means in practice, so our nations may seem divided. Both campaigns were bitter and divisive. Although, on both sides of the pond, the winners have called for unity, healing and working together, within the hearts and minds of many Brits and Americans, this intent doesn’t seem realistic.

It feels to many that there is a chasm, a cultural gulf, between those that voted one way and those that voted the other. A chasm of ideology, of belief, of deep mistrust, broadened and deepened by genuine concerns, if not heart-felt fears.

But there has, also, to be hope.

If we look at what’s either side of the chasms, we see “Republican” or “Democrat”; “Stay in the EU” or “Leave”. Labels, ideas, concepts with supporting logic and justifications. Which count for what? If recent referendum and elections has taught us anything, it’s that what is said in a campaign is no more nor less than campaigning: it’s probably not wise to take it literally . . . whoever said it and whichever ‘side’ we might feel a greater affinity for.

More than that, on both sides, are not we all human beings, with shared needs?

There is only a cultural chasm if, in our minds, we create one. Instead we can choose to remember that, if we cast our vote this year, either way, we were all doing our bit, to the best of our ability, to make our country a better place. For America to be great again, for Britain to be Great again, is what we all want: just as we all seek to live in a peaceful world, to be valued as unique individuals, to feel that we belong. These are the basic needs of any and all human beings . . . values that we all share . . . however we voted.
